Countdown to Halloween: 22 Days to Go!

Today, I'm showing off the first sketch of the cover illo for "Secrets of the Witchkind," a d20 System product I designed for NUELOW Games that's releasing this week. You can see the final at the NUELOW Games blog by clicking here.

Sketch of cover for "Secrets of the Witchkind." Art by Bradley K. McDevitt

"Secrets of the Witchkind" was partially inspired by the classic television show "Bewitched." It chronicles the adventures of a witch who falls in love with a mortal, marries him, and tries to give up her magic. The first season is especially interesting, as many of the episodes almost seem like allegories for anti-racism and pro-equal rights arguments, and an interesting look into how gender roles have changed for married couples since the 1960s Does the sort of "normal housewife" that Samantha tries so hard to be even exist anymore?

NUELOW Games and Marv Wolfman

Through an arrangement with Marv Wolfman, NUELOW Games recently published a collection his "Love Witch" stories. These were originally published by Skywald back in the early 1970s. Here are a couple sample pages.

Art by Ernie Colon & Jack Able
The book featuring the comics is titled, not surprisngly, "Love Witch." In addition to the two fantastic excursions into dark fantasy that is "Love Witch," the book features a third Wolfman fantasy story--"Cassandra of the Seventh Wind"--and an RPG section by yours truly that lets you bring Cassandra and the Love Witch's magic to d20 System campaigns.

"Love Witch," however, isn't the only work by Wolfman that graces NUELOW's line-up of titles. He also wrote the comics featured in NUELOW's "Monster Monster: Soul Drinkers" (which contains RPG rules by Andrew Pavlides that translates the creature featured in Wolfman's story to D&D 5th Edition), and in "Lady Satan 2004" (where you will find d20 System game rules that let players create characters who are the literal children of Satan, designed once again by yours truly). Here are sample pages from those books:

Art by Ross Andru & Mike Esposito
(from "Lady Satan 2004")

They are part of NUELOW Games's ongoing effort to put unjustly forgotten comics for year's past in front of new readers. Each title includes the comics, together with all-new roleplaying game material and fiction inspired by them. Click here to see the complete line-up of NUELOW's comics/rpg hybrid titles. You may find your new favorite comics among them.

'Monster Monster' with art by Pablo Marcos
from NUELOW Games

NUELOW Games's Monster, Monster is series of books featuring horror comics illustrated by Pablo Marcos and RPG content for D&D Fifth Edition by Andrew Pavlides. Each book focuses on a different monster, and the main creators are joined by a different "guest star" contributor in each book. This post provides overviews of all three. (I edited all three, so that's partly why I'm plugging them here--yep, there's a little self-promotion action going on. Plus, if you're not familiar with the great Pablo Marcos, any one of the Monster, Monster books is a chance to become so,)

In Monster, Monster: Soul Drinkers, Pablo Marcos brings life to a script by the great Marv Wolfman, who wrote Marvel's legendary Tomb of Dracula series. Andrew Pavlides then used that quirky tale of gothic horror as inspiration for two all-new D&D monsters: The Soul Drinkers, a one-time mortals who traded their humanity for ageless beauty and an eternal hunger for souls; and the Soul Bereft, the twisted, monstrous husks that remain after a soul drinker is done with their victims. Several variants of each type of creature is included, as well as adventure seeds to help GMs include them in campaigns. Here's the first page of Wolfman & Marcos's horror tale as a preview:

Next up, we have Monster, Monster: Werewolves. The story included here--one of a werewolf who ends his childhood tormentors in a brutal fashion under the full moon--was written by Augustine Funnel. Pavlides provides a number of werewolf variants to spice up your horror adventures. Here's the first page of that story.

And, just released this week, there's Monster, Monster: Vampires. This latest entry in the series is bigger than both previous entries combined, with Marcos illustrating two tales from writer Ed Fedory, and Steve Miller (one-time contributor to TSR/Wizards of the Coast's celebrated Ravenloft gothic horror roleplaying game line) joining  Pavlides to provide vampire variants and adventure seeds.

In addition to the powerful artwork by Pablo Marcos, the books feature spot illustrations and pin-ups in the game sections by Robert Martin, Larry Elmore, Ricardo Villamonte, and others. The books are available in electronic format from RPGNow, DriveThruRPG, and DriveThruComics. You can see further previews of each volume at those sites.

Readers familiar with classic horror comics may recognize some of the pages above. The stories included in the Monster, Monster series all originally appeared in magazines published by Skywald during the mid-1970s. Some have undergone a number of editorial changes, however.

Horror.... Swingin' Seventies Style!

The story of two young women being subjected to torments by mysterious ghouls and robots unfolded in the pages of "Scream". Titled "The Saga of the Victims," the series ran for five chapters. The concluding sixth chapter was never printed, because publisher Skywald folded, so the women's ultimate fate will forever remain a mystery.

But now, a few scenes from their harrowing adventures are included in the latest "NUELOW Stock Art Collection"!

"NUELOW Stock Art Collection #14: Starkest Terror" features art adapted from the pages of those legendary stories in "Scream", together with additional drawings by Gene Day and Bill Everett. Like all of NUELOW's sets, they are presented under a license that allows you to use them to illustrate your own projects.

This post presents a few samples from the collection. They are all by Suso. You can preview the entire set or get own copy at RPGNow, DriveThruRPG, DriveThruComics, or DriveThruFiction. (Click on the name of your favorite site to visit the listing page.)

On Black Friday...

... it seems like the perfect time to announce that NUELOW Game will soon release the first-ever collection of all the stories featuring "the black mistress of horror," Skywald Publications' Lady Satan! I am editing and contributing original material to the book. The editing part includes a few tweaks here and there to make the comics slightly more reader-friendly--in the sense that I'm making the story flow a little better than it did in the original version.

Titled Lady Satan 1974 (so as to not confuse it with NUELOW's other Lady Satan book), it tells the dark story of Anne, a young African American woman who becomes possessed by a spirit hellbent on being the mother of Satan's baby. Written by Alan Hewetson and illustrated by Ricardo Villamonte and Pablo Marcos, Skywald's Lady Satan is an all-but-forgotten milestone in the history of comics, as she was the first African American anti-hero to headline her own series.

In addition to the classic comics, the book will include fiction by yours truly featuring the other Lady Satan, and roleplaying material for both the d20 System and the ROLF! game.

I will post more when the book is released. In the meantime, here's a sample page to introduce you to Lady Satan 1974!

If you want to warm up to the NUELOW debut of this great, classic character, check out the original Nazi-busting Lady Satan in the original Lady Satan book, and read how she gained her mystical powers in The Werewolf Hunter #1.

Master Key: Keeping an Eye on Evil!

Art by Paul Gattuso
When a mysterious ray from outer space shot through amateur astronomer Ray Cardell's telescope lense and into his eye, he was left with strange powers. Now, he can see through solid objects, melt metal or burn flesh with a glance, and bend others to his will by locking eyes with them. Naturally, he turned to fighting crime, because that's what one does after being struck by a mysterious ray from space.

NUELOW Games has collected the five best Master Key stories in a single volume, cleverly titled Master Key. The stories are by Charles Sultan  and Paul Gattuso and they feature the quirky mix of superheroics and hardboiled crime fiction that's previously been seen in NUELOW's Black Dwarf (which also featured Gattuso's work) and Dynamic Man.

In addition to the off-beat comics, Master Key contains all-new  rules for OGL Modern that focus on vision-based superpowers, such as x-ray and heat vision--Master Key's main superpowers. This never-before-seen material is by yours truly, and it is easly incorporated into any d20 System-based game that uses talent trees, even if you don't use any other part of NUELOW's OGL superpower rules.

You can see previews or get your own copy of Master Key from RPGNow by clicking here. It can also be had from DriveThruComics and DriveThruRPG.

Picture Perfect Horrorday

Halloween is fast approaching. To get start getting you in the mood, here are some sample illustrations from the sets I've compiled for NUELOW Games. (They are illustrations which can be purchased and used under a royalty-free license that is so broad it'll let you use them in just about any way you can conceive of. They can all be had--a total of over 100 great drawings in one easy download--by clicking here.)

These three drawings tell a rather horrible tale when arranged here... even if they were originally completely unrelated. Does it continue after the poor woman's body is carried away? Any suggestions out there?

The Black Dwarf Strikes at NUELOW Games!

Paul Gattuso's "Black Dwarf" is the latest hero to be retrieved from the forgotten corners of comic book history and put in front of modern audiences where he will find (I hope) new fans.

Black Dwarf is another of the many cool characters that came out of Harry Chesler's production studio during the early 1940s, debuting in the pages of Spotlight Comics in 1944. The series was created by Gattuso, who illustrated all ten episodes. Dana Dutch, best remembered for writing romance comics, is known to have written several of the later Black Dwarf tales, but Gattuso may have written some of them himself. We may never know, as Chesler's records are long gone.

"The Black Dwarf" from NUELOW Games contains six stories and all-new roleplaying game material inspired by them from yours truly and Rob Garitta. It's been released with two different covers--check out previews here and here. (It was released with two different covers.)

Here are a couple scenes of the Black Dwarf in action, as well as a few splash pages from the book, as further preview.

The Sorceress of Zoom strikes again!

The multiverse's most dangerous femme-fatale returns in NUELOW Games's "The Sorceress of Zoom: Down to Earth". The book features five weird tales in which the Sorceress tries to gain control of Earth's magical treasures and faces off with hardboiled gangsters, Eastern mystics, and Morgana La Fay of Camelot! Here are a few preview pages...

The book also contains OGL d20 Modern roleplaying game rules that detail the artifacts the Sorceress uses to control her flying city, and others that will facilitate the creations of cross-reality games in the mode of TV show "Sliders"--not to mention the opportunity for PCs to chase the Sorceress as she moves from universe to universe.

Honey Starchilde, Space Hooker!

NUELOW Games is preparing to make another collection of art available. This one will have a retro-sci fi theme, similar to the popular Scenes From Yesterday's Future collection. Here are a few images from the set that NUELOW Games' L.L. Hundal nicknamed "The Exploits of Honey Starchilde, Space Hooker!"

I'm including her amusing comments (together with one of my own, incorporating her Honey Starchilde name) on these Xela illos with this post. They made this Picture Perfect Wednesday even more perfect.

Honey Starchilde's Close Encounter of the Entirely-Too-Friendly Kind...

Honey and her pimp Gerald discover why open-air bukakke parties are illegal on Mining Outpost Xevon IV.

Gerald must rescue Honey from a rival pimp who has the backing of the Space Mafia.
