Picture Perfect Wednesday:
Theda Bara, the Original Goth Chick

During the late 1910s and early 1920s, Theda Bara emerged as a hugely popular movie star, specializing in playing evil and creepy women. Her film career began when she was 30, around the age when actresses were considered "too old" for anything but matronly parts, and she went onto star in numerous mega-hits that helped make Fox Studios into a Hollywood power-house. She retired from acting at the age of 41, after marrying director Charles Brabin. Her final film, "Madame Mystery" (1926), was co-directed by Stan Laurel.

Bara has the distinction of being the world's first fabricated off-screen personality. Her official bio from Fox Studios claimed that she was a life-long dabbler in the occult who had been born in he shadow of the Sphinx--the product of a torrid love affair between an artist and an Arabian princess. The truth was that she had been born in Cincinnati to a tailor and a housewife and that she had been a struggling actress on Broadway before getting her first big film break in the 1914 picture "A Fool There Was." Her real name was Theodosia Burr Goodman.

Bara, with her dark, entirely fabricated public image and her heavy, almost panda-like eye make-up, also has the distinction of being history's first Goth Chick.

Only two of Bara's films survive to present day--strangely enough her career bookends of "A Fool There Was" and "Madame Mystery." The original prints for the rest, including her celebrated starring turns in the smash-hit costume dramas "Cleopatra" and "Salome" were destroyed in a fire at Fox Studios in 1937. Bara's personal copies of her films all fell victim to her lack of knowledge regarding proper storage of nitrate-based film stock; she discovered to her sorrow in the 1940s when she checked her library that the passage of time had literally reduced her films to dust..

Theda Bara passed away at the age of 69, Although she has sunken into obscurity, she remains a source of inspiration for Goth Chicks, and was almost certainly the point of origin for the silent movie star turned evil undead cult leader in "The Dead Want Women."

Although I can't help but wonder if she wouldn't prefer to be remembered like this:

Classic Cinema (also known as Movie Monday at various times) returns with "The Royal Bed," an obscure classic political comedy starring greats such as Lowell Sherman and Mary Astor. You can read my review by clicking here... and then watch this undeservedly obscure film.

The Louise Brooks Quarterly

Silent movie star Louise Brooks had such a unique and special look that she started fashion trends in her day, inspired the creation of a major comic book character after she had passed, and continues to inspire fashion designers and artists to this day. And now she joins our rotating line-up of quarterly lovelies. Click here to see all posts featuring Brooks that have been featuring previously on Shades of Gray.

'The Frozen Ghost' ventures forth
frrom the Inner Sanctum

The Frozen Ghost (1945)
Starring: Lon Chaney Jr., Evelyn Ankers, Milburn Stone, Elena Vergougo, Martin Kosleck, and Tala Birell
Director: Harold Young
Rating: Six of Ten Stars

When a heckler dies during one of his performances, a celebrated stage mentalist (Chaney) becomes convinced that he has a genuine ability to kill people with his mind. He retreats from public life and into the refuge of a wax museum run by friend (Vergougo) while his agent (Stone) and fiance (Ankers) try to help him deal with guilt and delusions. But when strange events start occurring at the museum, including the disappearance of its owner, he grows ever more convinced of his supernatural powers... while the police become ever more convinced that he is a murderer.

"The Frozen Ghost" is the fourth entry in Universal's "Inner Sanctum" series starring Lon Chahey Jr. in a different role each time (with frequent co-star Evelyn Ankers similarly showing up in several of them). It's another quirky mystery that walks the line between thriller and horror while delivering a series of twists and turns, some of which will be not be surprising to most modern veiwers both others are as effective now as they were in 1945 when the film was first released.

Lon Chaney Jr. is in fine form as the tortured and perpetually confused Alex Gregor, as he basically spends the film as a sad-sack whose life keeps collapsing in the most nightmarish ways--be it on the professional, romantic, or completely mundane front. Gregor is a character who can't even go for a walk without some horrible development cropping up to make him even more miserable... and to make it even more certain that he is doomed.

On first glance, it might seen a little overkill that have a mentalist with apparently real psychic powers hiding in a creepy wax museum with an even creepier staff who may or may not have sinister motives, and who has friends who may or may not be trying to hide bad intentions behind their helpful smiles, but it works here. The film remains engaging and entertaining from beginning to end. Fans of Chaney and of classic Universal horror and mystery films should check it out.

Halloween is coming....

... and the Shaolin Death Squad is celebrating with an excellent version of Danny Elfman's "Dead Man's Party".

(Sure... the lead singer seems to flub the lyrics at one point during this live performance, but damn if this isn't a great and energetic version of the Halloween anthem! I think these may be the best guitar work on the song since Oingo Boingo recorded the original.

NUELOW Games Cover Art Gallery, Part One

I've been threatening to do a gallery post of the "artwork" I've created for NUELOW Games's "ROLF!: The Rollplaying Game of Big Dumb Fighters" for some time now. Well, today is the day.

The following illos are all collages that were made using existing art or by running photos through Photoshop to make them look like they are drawings. They were made using art I have license to use, or that is in the public domain. (I have, literally, over 1 million illos that I have licenses for.)

If the guy who did the Obama "Hope" poster gets to call himself an artist, and people who slap captions on photos and post them to Facebook get to call themselves artists, then I guess I'm an artist, too!

And yes... I am available for commissions! (This will be the first in an irregular series displaying my "artistic efforts"... unless you folks out there tell me to knock it off. And make me cry in the process....)

Click on the links in the titles if you want more information about the product the picture was made to illustrate, or to see it in place on the cover with the other design elements.

"Red Robin vs. The Editor & The Clones of Romney"

"Escape From Eden"
"The Fireman vs. The Firewitch"

Picture Perfect Wednesday: Steranko

How did I get this far without featuring Jim Steranko here at Shades of Gray? While it's true that there is a bottomless pool of pictures for me to post, and movies and graphic novels for me to review, I'm a bit surprised at myself for not having at least gotten around to SOMETHING he'd done.

But, thanks to the prodding of loyal visitor (a Steranko fan who has designed this excellent, content rich site dedicated to his work), I'm rectifying that oversight now with a small Picture Perfect Wednesday gallery. (And I really must get around to writing a review of "Essential Captain America" one of these days, as it features some of Steranko's finest comic book work, outside of his "Nick Fury, Agen of SHIELD" issues.)

And speaking of Nick Fury...

Picture Perfect Wednesday:
Your Guess Is As Good As Mine

Actually... I can give an explanation for this one. Scroll down a bit if you really want to know.

The picture was taken by Carlo Polito in June of 1958. It's of 17-year-old Bianca Passarge of Hamburg dressed up as a cat and dancing on wine bottles in June 1958. Her performance was based on a dream. She practiced for eight hours a day to do this.)
